Read Outlook .pst (and .ost) files in your browser and save each email as a PDF with attachments, folder structure and index.csv. Read-only, nothing uploaded, no Outlook needed.
A .pst file (Outlook Data File) is how Outlook for Windows stores and exports mail. It's a binary database that only Outlook opens, which is awkward when you no longer have Outlook, are on a Mac, or need the emails as documents. Mailtrail reads the PST format directly (read-only) and turns each email into a PDF.
How to do it
Open the converter in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Nothing is installed and nothing is uploaded.
Drop the .pst file. It is read in place, only the parts needed for each email; the file is never modified.
Browse the folders (Inbox, Sent Items, Archive and your own folders), search and filter.
Pick the outputs: one PDF per email (on by default), an attachments folder, optionally one merged PDF, .eml copies and .mbox per folder. Click Export and choose where to save the ZIP.
Getting a PST from Outlook for Windows
In classic Outlook: File → Open & Export → Import/Export.
Choose Export to a file → Outlook Data File (.pst).
Select the mailbox or folder, tick Include subfolders, and pick a location.
You may skip the optional password: password-protected PSTs are not supported (we don't remove passwords).
The new Outlook for Windows can't export PST files; switch back to classic Outlook for the export. Archive files Outlook already made (archive.pst) can be used directly.
Limits
Unicode (Outlook 2003+) and older ANSI PSTs are supported. OST files (Outlook's offline cache) are read on a best-effort basis; if one won't open, export a PST instead.
Emails whose body exists only as RTF are converted to plain text.
Writing or repairing PST files isn't supported.
What you get
One PDF per email with a header block (subject, from, to, cc, date, folder, attachment list) and the body, including embedded images. Searchable text, not screenshots.
Your folder structure mirrored in the ZIP, and file names that sort by date: Inbox/2024-03-05_0912 Jane Doe - Invoice March.pdf.
Attachments as original files under attachments/.
index.csv (date, from, to, cc, subject, folder, file names, attachment count, Message-ID, pages) and errors.csv for anything that couldn't be converted.
Optional: one merged PDF, .eml per email, .mbox per folder. Pro adds Bates numbering, page numbers, SHA-256 hashes and bookmarks.
Private by design
The conversion runs inside your browser tab with Web Workers. Your archive is never uploaded, and there is no server that could see it. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads. The only network call is the optional license-key check, which sends the key and a random device ID.
Questions
Does my PST get uploaded?
No. The converter runs entirely in the browser tab. You can disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded and it keeps working.
How big can the PST be?
We tested multi-GB files. PSTs are read with random access, so memory use depends on the largest single email, not on the file size.
What does it cost?
Free for up to 25 emails per export. Standard ($29 one-time) removes the limit; Pro ($69 one-time) adds Bates numbering, page numbers, hashes and bookmarked merged PDFs. See pricing.
